Tasmania is stronger when we look out for each other

When individuals, communities, services, businesses and leaders listen and work together, we can make meaningful changes that have a lasting impact.

Tasmanians have shared a strong desire to live in communities where they feel a sense of belonging. Yet many people across the state feel lonely, isolated and disconnected from the systems designed to support them.

A Connected and Respectful Tasmania aims to bridge this gap and create a Tasmania where no one is left behind and every person feels safe, respected and part of their community.

How it began

For more than 75 years, Tasmanians have turned to us at Relationships Australia during life’s highs and lows. Each year, our team of nearly 160 staff walks alongside more than 8,000 people across the state.

Through people we have met in our work, we knew that the information we had was just part of the story. Too many people experience isolation, disrespect, or exclusion because of who they are, where they live or the systems they have to navigate. This harms individuals, families and communities – and it weakens our collective wellbeing.

We were curious to know more about the experience of people out there in our communities.

And so, to mark our 75th year, through 75 Conversations in 75 Places, we asked Tasmanians about what helps people feel connected and respected and what can make that harder.

These conversations were the beginning of our shared journey.

Where we went, and what we heard

Our team travelled all around Tasmania, from the far South to the tip of the North West Coast.

You can explore these conversations yourself using this interactive map.

What’s next?

This vision is about changing how we relate to one another – in our neighbourhoods, workplaces, services and systems – so no one is left behind and everyone has a fair chance to thrive.
This work belongs to all of us.

We have heard what people want and need to feel respected and connected and we want to help turn community voices into real change.

There are many ways to get involved. As we walk this journey together we are curious to find out where else it might take us.

The goal is ambitious: to create a more connected and respectful Tasmania. But it’s achievable with your help. We invite you to learn how you can get involved.
